My cat does the same thing and he is about 15. His hair is not matted, though. It started with him meowing all the time...weird and constant meows! He has only been to the vet once in his lifetime and that was to get "fixed". I'm worried that taking him in a crate in the car might be devastating to him. His following us around is driving us all nuts..he is under foot wherever we go and is starting to get kicked from getting in our way and we can't see him. He gets on the counters now and licks any dirty dishes that are setting out, he will eat through baggies to get to food, etc. Just a scrounger right now. I am going to call a vet this morning and see what they think. The websites we've searched point to Diabetes, but I'm just not sure.

That could be a variety of things. It could be geriatric decline, kidney failure, worms, diabetes... You need to take your cat to the vet for blood tests and diagnostics to find out what it is though because it does not sound like something that will get better on it's own.

Cats are fastidious creatures by nature so if he is not taking care of his fur then a trip to the vet is in order. He may not like the ride in the crate but it is for the best. If you have never taken him to the vet except to be fixed then the vet may have to run more diagnostic work because they will not have a baseline... That is why yearly vet checkups are so important. You may be able to find a vet that makes house calls too.
