An anteater is an egg-laying mammal that feeds by shooting their whip like tongue in and out of the insect's nests for 160 times per minute. Anteater belongs to the Myrmecophagidae family. Basically anteaters are of four species involving three genera. Anteaters can be seen in Trinidad and from Southern Mexico to Northern Argentina. According to the scientific data available, it has been estimated that a giant anteater can be capable of consuming 30,000 ants per day. The anteaters look very unusual – they have a slender head along with a trunk adjoined to a long, lean muzzle located at the close to the ground in order to search for the insects. Anteaters have a poor vision and their hearing ability is also not up to the mark – but they have a very good sense of smell. As anteaters have low energy diet, so they have adapted to a low rate of metabolism and low body temperature. Their movement is also not very fast. Female anteaters carry only one offspring each year and devote most of the time in the care for the infants.
