Depends on the dog. I held my dogs puppy usually during birth. Every dog is different. They are not like bird, they won't eat them if you touch them. She will let you know if she will let you near them.

If you touch them when its too soon yes she will let you know but if you have a persistant person trying to touch them then they have been know to hurt the puppies trying to get them away from you.
