Well, that sounds likely to be a robins egg , the mother won't hatch it once it's touched by a human but you're best to keep it warm under some straw.
But I highly doubt that it will be able to hatch, plus a baby bird would need to be fed worms as soon as it hatches, but that does sound like a robins egg... that could have fallen from a robins nest nearby or it could be a miscarriage that a robin had.
