When he/she stinks! ;)

Honestly, I shower my chihuahua every week.  You can opt for the dog shampoo's if you'd like (specifically formulated for the ph balance of a dog), but I actually just use high-end pantene products.  The rule of thumb, always wash out all of the shampoo and use a conditioner as they are generally designed to neutralize ph (our body regulates the ph, just like a dog, the end result should be fur that smells great and a healthy coat if fed properly).

Some dogs will react negatively to human shampoo's from what I've read.  I've watched for flaking, dryness, itching, you name it.  I've never had an issue with my dog.

At first he didn't like it, but then after we started adding a treat to the mix, he's extremely hyper and runs around at full blast.  I always towel try him gently to get the majority of the water out (they get cold very easily) and then let him run around to dry out.

The end result is a clean, extremely happy dog that doesn't like the act of showering, but loves the after effects.

Also note - I do not tub bathe the dog - I turn on my second shower and wash him up and he doesn't mind the shower water - you may have to do it a couple of times.  If you do shower him, don't flip him or hold him, you'll either get clawed or he'll become scared of the water if it hit's his belly (a dog will feel very exposed).  Just pop him on the floor, start with a nice rinse, lather up with soap, rinse again thoroughly, lather up with conditioner, rinse thoroughly, and just keep warm water on him.

A chihuahua's normal body temperature is between 101 and 102 degree's F.  Make sure to keep that into consideration as you don't want luke warm water as it'll just make him cold.

Enjoy your dog - I've never owned one before, and I have turned into a dog lover.  The little guy is awesome, listens to all commands (sit, jump, shake, down, heel) and loves people.  He never barks, and I'm training him not to bark.  I would buy another chihuahua in The future - beautiful dogs.
