The term hawk applies to small medium sized birds of pray. The term can apply to birds in the Accipiter family like the buzzards, kites and certain types of falcons. These birds are known to eat reptiles, insects, small mammals and little birds. Hawks possess sharp bills, long tails and powerful feet with bent talons. They are graceful creatures of flight thanks to their broad, rounded wings.

Hawks are known to have a vision which is more than 8 times sharper than human sight. By virtue of the photoreceptors in the retina or a high number of nerves connecting these receptors to the brain, the bird is easily able to spot its prey or enemy. The voice of the Broad-winged Hawk gains a high pitched whistle (peee-uurr) during the breeding season. A high-pitched "keeeee" whistle is also made to defend the broad-winged hawk's territory.
