Human being is greatly indebted to certain insects, which supply them with useful products. Many commercial products produced by insects are indispensable to modern man are.

Honey:
Honeybees produce honey. In USA., 6 million colonies of honey bees produce about 150,000 tons of honey annually, which serves as human food and medicine. In Pakistan honeybee culture is gaining potential as a cottage industry.

Beeswax:
Honeybees also yield beeswax, used in polished, candles and modelling and wax thread. Certain scale insects also produce wax.

Raw silk:
The silkworms (Bombyx mori and other) supply the raw silk in the Orient and Europe. A cocoon yields about 1000 feet of fibre, and about 25,000 cocoons are unwound to spin one pound of silk thread. The number of silkworms employed in service of man can be imagined by the fact that nearly 23 million kg silk are used in the world every year.

Lac:
The shellac of commerce is obtained from waxy secretions of lac insects the females of which secrete lac. It is useful as a foundation of lacquers and shellacs.

Dyes:
The dyes known as tannin, cochineal and Crimson Lake are derived from the dried bodies of certain scale insects living on cacti.
