My dog was chasing his tail one day and caught it, his tail lost. He was missing his tail hair for months. He was only a puppy and grew out of chasing his tail though.

Dogs can use their teeth to barber to break their hair shafts while itching or grooming.  It is possible this is self-trauma.  If your dog has longer hair it is possible it became stuck under a chair (especially chairs with wheels) and it was plucked or cut at this time.  There are diseases that can cause hair loss in pets but these usually cause hair loss from the hair base.  If this problem continues have your dog examined by a veterinarian to screen for mites, ringworm, and dermal infection.
