The name depends on age:
  • A mature female horse is called a 'mare'. This term is usually used for female horses over 3 years of age, although some horse organisations use 4 years.
  • A mare which is used mainly for breeding is called a 'broodmare'.
  • A mare which is suitable for breeding (regardless of whether it is actually used) is called a 'breeding mare'.
  • A young female horse is called a filly. Depending on organisation, this may be defined as under 3 years, under 4 years or under 5 years.
  • The terms foal, yearling and suckling can be used for both female horses and male horses.

For further details, see female horse.

A female horse or female of any other species (equine) is known as a mare. Adult female horse or adult female of related species like zebra etc. are also known as mares. The mares generally have the canine teeth elementary or defective. Mares love to get loved. They need special care. At times if you drive your attention towards them they feel very good.

Generally small female horses become mares when they are of 4 years. There are various acts providing the fact that the small horses cannot be put for sale before they are 4 years of age. You should make it a point to understand the behaviour of your mare. Also make it a point that you feed your mare on time and with proper healthy food. You should also make it a point that you provide your mare with ample amount of water.
