His body automatically makes new feathers after a while, pushing the old feather out of it's little 'socket'. This process is called 'moulting'.

The eagle goes away from his nest for about 150 days and scrapes his beak against the rocks and pulls out his worn feathers and when it is all done, he returns renewed. How amazing is that?
