All turtles sleep especially the RES.
They need sleep from 7-12 hours a day
so when you go to bed you turn all the lights off, they will sleep thinking it is night time
when you wake up you turn the lights on, they will slowly wake up thinking it is morning.

In the long run buy a timer so it automadically does it for you.
You will have to think what turtles would do in the wild and make their habitat as close to that as possible.

Yes,RES do sleep when there is not much noise around them and when it is dark they often sleep when they are basking do you have a basking place for your turtles if not you should make a place in the wild they basking in the sun any where from 8 to 10 hours a day.

I have a female RES. She sleeps whenever she feels like it day or night... but she is easily awakened, usually just from the floor vibrations as I approach the area of her habitat. She's very trusting of humans as far as turtles go, so perhaps yours is just more sensitive to outside stimuli.

I have a floating platform, But I have never seen the RES basking on it. She sleeps underwater. Is this normal for her to be in the water all the time ?

Yes Res will sleeps at night, and can be awaken easily when someone enters the room, or near by him. If you have more than 1 res, they usually not sleep much, but they do rest underwater.

I have a yellow-bellied slider, but they're in the same family so it's probably the same sleeping habits. I notice that mine sleeps in the water sometimes, either with his head underneath the water or he'll stand with his body against the side of the tank and sleep that way.
When he sleeps underwater he'll come up every so often for a breath but I think it's just done instinctively, I don't think he really wakes up.
Your turtle will probably just find a way that he's most comfortable sleeping and choose that, whether it's in the water or on land. =) I suggest  you Sleep cycle alarm clock through this you get more results about Sleep Cycle .

They sleep whenever they please, mine sometimes sleep underwater, or when they are basking. Charlie can sleep through a lot, Morgan on the other hand cannot he will wake up as soon as I enter the room.

The Red-eared Slider turtle refers to a semi-aquatic turtle that belongs to the family Emydidae. It is a native animal of the southern United States. They do sleep and their sleeping pattern is not determined or fixed. It depends on the habitat they live in.

My RES is very small and hardly sleeps in water. He likes being covered up and is on land most of the time. Is that okay? And he sleeps a lottt! Also he pooped out something white and I'm not sure if thats good. SOS!
