The French Mastiff, also known as the Dogue de Bordeaux or the Bordeaux Mastiff, is one of France's oldest breeds of dog. They take their name from the Bordeaux region in southern France, where they originated from in the fourteenth century.

As you can see, the French Mastiff is a pretty large breed of dog. However, despite their reputation for being strong, heavy-built and imposing, these dogs are not usually thought of as being particularly dangerous or aggressive.
Like many breeds of large dog, the Dogue de Bordeaux has a very short lifespan. The longest recorded lifespan for a French Mastiff is only twelve years, with the average being around six.
There has been a recent rise in the popularity of the breed, but the breeders' emphasis has unfortunately been on the appearance rather than the health of the dogs.
