The French Mastiff, also known as the Dogue de Bordeaux or the Bordeaux Mastiff, is one of France's oldest breeds of dog. They take their name from the Bordeaux region in southern France, where they originated from in the fourteenth century.

The video below shows a French Mastiff puppy with its mother:

As you can see, the French Mastiff is a pretty large breed of dog.  However, despite their reputation for being strong, heavy-built and imposing, these dogs are not usually thought of as being particularly dangerous or aggressive.

Like many breeds of large dog, the Dogue de Bordeaux has a very short lifespan. The longest recorded lifespan for a French Mastiff is only twelve years, with the average being around six.

There has been a recent rise in the popularity of the breed, but the breeders' emphasis has unfortunately been on the appearance rather than the health of the dogs.

French Mastiffs in Movies, Television and Celebrity Culture
  • Beasley, the hooch from Turner and the Hooch (1989), is a French Mastiff.
  • Steve from the 2002 movie The Italian Job guards his estate with the dogs.
  • Several famous footballers (including Andy van der Meyde, Frank Lampard and Wayne Rooney) all own French Mastiffs.
  • One episodes of the TV series Bones features a French Mastiff as a cadaver dog.

One of my favorite's. :-). The breed commonly referred to as the French Mastiff is the Dogue De Bordeaux. It was the breed used as Hooch in the movie Turner and Hooch and there was an appearance of one in an episode of Bones as a cadaver dog, I believe, (off the top off my head for example.
