The best home remedy is to wash the dog's eyes frequently with water (use sterilize saline water) but if eye is swollen and are aching then this technique won't help. For such kind of problems seek veterinary doctor help and immediately take the dog to him. Visine is not good and ought not to be used. It doest give any benefit but just reduce the redness of eyes for short time period. In some condition it may unsafe for eyes. One can use ointments or artificial tear drops they are usually safe for eyes but all these should not be used without a veterinary doctor's prescription.

Applying home remedies can be dangerous so it is better to go to veterinarian before trying home remedies. By using home remedies one can save money in short run but this will cost more in long run. If the dog has eye infection and one can see the redness the common cause can be the glaucoma or dry eye. If both of these infections are not treated properly then this can cause serious damage to dog eyes and treatment becomes more expensive. So ask for veterinarian about the infection and take his opinion of treating this infection at home.
