Sexual maturity in dogs depends upon breed. Some small breeds of dogs can be sexually mature as early as 4 months and some large breeds as late as one year. On an average, dogs become sexually mature at the age of 6-9 months.
It is generally recommended not to breed dogs after first heat cycle because dogs can be sexually mature at this age but not physically. Same is true for male dogs. Male dogs at the time of sexual maturity may not have good quality of sperms. Both male and female dogs should be certified by the vet before breeding and some of the tests are possible after 2 years of age. Ideally, pet dogs should be fixed to avoid many complications.
