There are various ways in which one can deal with tent caterpillars. There are natural ways and chemical ways. In around three weeks the caterpillars usually disappear of their own accord, and they are not a very great risk to trees. Natural methods include getting some poultry and feeding the insects to the birds.

Others involve using clippers to kill them by physically clipping the insects. A natural pesticide can be made from chrysanthemums, this is still poisonous so be careful. Kerosene can also be used to burn the insects but this can damage the tree as well. You can also simply apply kerosene to the larvae. A pesticide that is widely used to spray the caterpillars with is Bacillus thuringiensis. Whatever steps you decide to take remember that is during the twilight hours of morning and evening that are best suited as the insects return to their nests after their feeding frenzies.

Tent worms are out of their nests now and have for the last 4 years literally eaten all the leaves off of several tress in our area. Tried to burn what nests we find but there are too many. It's a real infestation. Will eat flower leaves, bushes plus tree leaves. I'm real tired f them!

Simple and cheep. Bleach. Pour full strength bleach in a high stream spray bottle and spray the webbed nest. Few are missed so go back the next day to spray any lingering worms. Ware old clothing and not a windy day.
