No - in fact, cats are known for being extremely hygienic animals. If you have ever owned a cat, then you'll know that they are almost always cleaning themselves - when they're not eating or sleeping, anyway.

I have kept a grand total of four cats in my time and none of them were unsanitary or untidy.

We sometimes had to brush them - to stop the hairballs - but that was it.

When they're kittens and haven't yet learned to wash properly, then sometimes you'll have to give them a helping hand. Otherwise they should be able to keep themselves clean.

  • The cat is the most popular domestic pet in the whole world. It has been estimated that there are approximately 202 million domestic cats worldwide. Dogs follow in second place, with 171 million.
  • The cat was first domesticated as a companion and used to deal with filthy pests such as rats. The modern domestic cat is a descendant of the wildcat.

Cats are incredibly clean unless left outside to their own devices where they could get dirty and injured or ill.
