The gestation period of a female Guppy is 22-26 days. When the female Guppy becomes fertilized, the area near its anus known as the gravid spot enlarges and darkens. Water temperature of about 22 degree C or 72 degree F is suitable and best for Guppies to reproduce.
The interesting thing is that only after a few hours of giving birth, the female Guppy is ready for conception again. If the male does not wish to mate soon after the female has given birth, the female can use stored sperm from the last mating.
Adult Guppy males and mothers eat their own infants. So it is advisable to have a dual tank for the infants and pregnant mothers so that there is a place for the young to feel safe till they are old enough that is about 10 weeks. You can also simply provide a lot of plants in the aquarium for the young to hide in.
A female guppy is pregnant for about 1-2 months, if you have a pregnant guppy I can tell that she will need to be separated from the other fish in a breeding box, you can buy breeding boxes from most stores for £3.97 ($5.97), because if she is left with other fish they will eat the babies. Some tell tale signs that she is close to delivering the babies is that she will stop eating, hang around away from the other fish and her gravid spot will be almost black. Pleased to help. Nicki.
Guppies gestate for approximately 4 weeks. It's a little hard to tell at first if they're pregnant tho because the gravid spot doesn't darken the second she conceives.
Two 20 gal tanks, well planted with CO2 units, been established for 2 years and never medicated or sick. My red velvet swordtails have produced lovely hardy fry for me. My snails produce for me with reckless abandon. One female guppy produced fry last year, she died but I have three of her daughters. The father is in the tank along with 1 new male I purchased last summer. I change the water in each tank once per week and the water is from a well planted tank with no stock just vegetation. I change the planted tank water out each week at a 50% ratio and the stocked tanks at 25% ratio.I check tank stats once a week prior to and after each water changes. They are fed flake, live food and greens weekly in a variety of ways to keep it interesting. Now I would like to know why Ive not gotten any more batches of fry. The two males are not related to each other or the females. There is one female that I swear now and then is pregnant, and I waited with anxiously and nothing. Her spot disappears then turns an orange and gradually starts growing an turns black for two weeks as she gets fat then boom its gone she is thin and I can't find any fry.I have even kept the lights low the last week in the hopes they couldnt see any fry to eat them. Still I am not able to see any fry when she goes thin again. And yes the filter intake it protected. What gives ?
I have guppies and I have 11 guppies 5 males and 6 females I have had 2 for 3 months and it had 5 frys and they were dead the next day now today I bought 9 and some were pregnant I think there pregnant for 4-5 weeks. Hope it helps.
Sukikarp - Once a guppy has been fertilised once it can give birth for usual 4-8 months after that without coming in any contact with a male. Guest with 2 pregnant guppies - Guppies can get quite stressed being in a small space which may delay the pregnancy but try not to keep them in the small tank but maybe move them between the two or if you intend to keep breeding them get a breeding chamber with a divide in it. This cost me about £5.50 from the local pet store.
I bought a guppy from my local pet shop bout 2 weeks ago and I now have 25 fry all alive and they a week old I bought 5 guppies at the same time all female and tonight I have just separated another female guppy to give birth in the next few days the thrill is exceptional I love it
I new to the whole breeding guppies. But I got this guppy from the pet store and she looks pregnant and dosen't like going around my males. I think I can see fry in her. But I'm not sure can you give me some advice. I'm planning to sell guppies so I have 2 females. There new to the tank but my female came like she is. My other female seems to be getting bigger but I'm not sure. Can you give me some advice. Please.
My female gave birth on the 1st of may. I have a few friends that are interested in taking a few so I don't have to sell them. How old do they need to be before they can leave the tank to a new one?
I would say about a month my guppies have been pregnant as far as I know for three days and one is being very still could some one tell me if its alright if the pregnant guppy is still?
I have 2 baby guppy's 1 male 1 female and they where born on the morning of christmas and the mother sadly died from temperature shock along with the dad(s) and its march 11 and I want to know when she will give birth to her children note:I have never separated the male and female so I'm pretty sure shes pregnant but I don't know when she'll give birth can you help me
Guppies are pregnant for about 1-2 month I have guppies myself and know that stressed guppies may wait as long as they can to give birth and just to point out guppies are live bearers and will need a breeding tank because both mother and father will eat the fry.
Ive only had my guppies for a week and the guppy died in a mating pose. My female is huge and its only been pregnat for a week. So I would recomend 10 or more gal I have a 20gal. Hope it helps
My guppies experience have been very different. My guppy has been pregnant for 2 and 1/2 years... I don't know if she has some disease or if that is a birth mark. Stay tuned to figure out. On the next episode of the pregnant fish. Thanks and good night
