I'm so sorry you're sad, if your dog has diabetes, it's not something that's going to go away, it's a disease that can be treated but not cured. Your dog being 12 years old is obviously an older dog and may not adjust well. Give your doggie all the love you have....watch him closely and return him to the vet if needed.
