The word "Rabies" comes from the Latin word "rabies" meaning rage, madness and fury. Rabies is a viral disease that attacks the nervous system and can turn fatal if not cured in time or if the person has not been vaccinated. The disease spreads through the bite of a rabid animal or human. It is mostly present in warm blooded animals. Since people tend to keep dogs as pets and dogs are more likely to bite a person then any other domestic animal they tend to be associated with rabies the most. It may however spread with the bite of cats, wolves, bats, bears, skunks, squirrels etc.

The best method to deal with rabies is vaccination. The process was developed by Emile Roux and Louis Pasteur in 1885. Asia, Africa and South America are where the disease is most prevalent with thirty thousand deaths occurring in India alone. One of the biggest problems is the prevalence of stray dogs.

The name rabies is derived from the Latin word rabies, which means madness, rage or fury. The term rabies is defined as a zoonotic disease which is caused by a virus which is known as the rabies virus. It causes acute encephalitis, which is commonly known as the swelling of the brain, in those mammals that contract the disease.

In human beings who have not taken their anti-rabies vaccination, rabies in most cases is a fatal disease. It could cause the person to die after he or she has developed neurological symptoms. To prevent the virus from progressing, it is necessary to go to a doctor at the earliest and promptly take a post-exposure vaccination.

The animals that are most likely to contract the rabies virus (in other words, the animals that are most likely to become rabid) are cats, dogs, human beings, raccoons, foxes, wolves, coyotes, bears, bats and horses.
