There are lots of animals that give off bad smells, but I think the worst, or at least the most famous, is the skunk.

We all know that skunks smell pretty bad, whether by word of mouth or having the misfortune of having had one spray their unique scent in your house (skunks are most commonly found across North America, reaching as far as Mexico in the south and Canada in the north)...

But what you might not know is the way skunks actually produce that powerful smell (it's not from lack of bathing!).

The smell is produced by the skunks anal glands, and is used as a defensive weapon to ward off bears and other predators.

Muscles next to the glands enable skunks to aim and spray with a fairly high degree of accuracy, The reason it smells so rancid is because the glands have chemicals containing sulfur - notorious for it's unpleasant odor.

One of the most common things that the smell has been likened to is that of burnt rubber. It is also said to be 'oily'- sticking to everything, impossible to get out and clings to the back of your throat... Sounds horrible! The moral of the story- don't do anything to anger a skunk or you'll live to regret it!
