As with anything we teach our pets (or our children), I think it has to do not only with the numerous repetitions of the desired words or commands our students hear over a period of time, but also with the inflection of our voices, the hand, body, eye, facial movements, and rewards associated with our verbalizations.

I do not think they actually understand language as a human does but they assosciate different sounds as of words with certain tasks as in fetch or stay. Now if the dog is owned by a German person say when he heres the word nein he knows it means no. If an American owned the dog he would assosciate the word no with no. So to sum things up I do not think animals actually understand languages but they do assosciate certain sounds ,as in words or commands to certain tasks when being trained.

Animals understand more then people give them create for. I train search dogs and they do understand some launguge, not just the sound of the word when you are in a search the dogs will respone to the word no matter how the tone is. Other wise only one person will be able to handle the dog since everyone has a difffernet tone in their voice. Most handlers teach the dog in two launguge so that the handler can always control the dog no matter who is working the dog.
