Sounds like an allergic reaction to me, too. Sometimes cats try to eat spiders, bees, and other insects. Another possibility is an abscess or an infected tooth, but I wouldn't expect those to cause both cheeks to swell.
Keep an eye on him in case the swelling progresses and he starts having trouble breathing. If he does, it's time for the vet, of course.
