Many species of ground squirrel like the flickertail hibernate in winter. They hibernation generally lasts for five to six months of the year. On the other hand tree squirrels are active throughout. However, they are not seen around as they prefer snuggle up with their family in their warm cozy nests and thus conserve body heat. Squirrels tend to spend all their lives within an area of three to five acres. If there is a short warm spell, tree squirrels will emerge briefly to replenish their stores. Squirrels can sense the slightest change in weather and bury nuts in underground stores or even indulge in a spot of binge-eating.
