Symbolically, moles on the sole of the foot are thought to reflect a laid-back, relaxed personality. They are also thought to be a sign that travel has a significant role in the life of the person with the mole.

  • What is a mole?
A mole is a patch of skin which is darker than the rest of the skin on the body. Clinically, they are known as melanocytes, and are usually present due to a collection of pigment cells close to the surface of the skin, which are darker than most other skin cells within the body. Many people are born with moles, and many more develop moles later in life. Some moles even disappear with age.

  • Why do moles cause problems?
Moles can be problematic because they can develop or mutate and become cancerous. If a mole becomes cancerous, it is known as malignant melanoma, and can spread throughout the body, causing skin cancer. Luckily, skin cancer is one of the easiest cancers to treat if it is spotted early on, because the malignant melanoma can simply be cut out of the skin.

  • What are the symptoms of skin cancer?
If your mole is itchy or bleeding, it could be cancerous. Other signs that a mole is cancerous are changes in size or shape of the mole. If the skin around your mole was previously pigment-free, but you notice small areas of darker, mole-like pigmentation around the mole, you should also get the mole examined by a doctor.

  • Protecting yourself from skin cancer
Avoiding unnecessary exposure to the sun's rays is the number one way to protect yourself from skin cancer. It is thought that the UV in sunlight can cause harmless moles to mutate and become cancerous.

If you do go out in the sun, make sure you wear sun cream all year round, not just in the summer.
