Curly coated retrievers only come in black or liver. They are covered with tight curls (like a lamb).
Irish setters are always a deep chestnut/mahogany red.
Gordon Setters are taller and larger and are always mainly black, with tan points.

If your dog was a Curly Coated Retriever, you should be able to notice the difference from the other two types you mentioned.

A Gordon Setter and an Irish Setter (also known as a Red Setter) however are very similar. A veterinarian or professional breeder should be able to help you identify the exact breed of your dog if you are having difficulty.
