Coelenterata is the old name of a phylum of invertebrates. These invertebrates are mostly marine. They included jellyfish, corals, hydras, and sea anemones and their allies which now come under the Cnidaria phylum. It is included in the Animalia kingdom and is part of the subkingdom Eumetazoa. The name is of Greek origin. It comes from the Greek word 'koilos' which means hollow.
The word coelenterata is no longer valid in science. The Ctenophora and the Cnidaria now come under the Metazoa along with several other phyla. A term that would include only these two phyla and exclude all others would be polyphyletic. In 1997 Lynn Margulis revised some earlier research of Thomas Cavalier Smith and concluded that Ctenopora and Cnidaria under the Eumetoazoa subregnum under the Radiata branch.
