All snake excrement leaves the body through an opening called the 'cloaca', so the answer snakes don't have a bum as we know it!

How do snakes poop?

The digestive system of a snake is very different from the kind that we humans are familiar with.

As far as pooping goes, snakes have a small opening called a cloaca located about 2/3's down their body. It is used for eliminating both solid and fluid waste.

Snakes also use this opening for a number of other things, including:

  • Mating
  • Laying eggs
  • Giving birth
  • Secreting scent
What is a cloaca?
The opening through which snakes excrete waste products is known as a cloaca.

It is used for a whole bunch of things - everything from excreting waste through to having little snake babies. It is also used by snakes to secrete scents that are used to communicate with other snakes.

Snakes are not the only animal to have a cloaca, as the following types of animals also commonly have this type of orifice:

  • Birds
  • Amphibians
  • Monotremes
  • Other reptiles

Snakes have an opening called a cloaca, through which they:
  • Void waste
  • Lay eggs
  • Give birth
  • And through which mating takes place

It's located underneath a large scale on their undersides, at the base of the tail, where the tail joins the body and where the rear legs would be located in most animals.
