Actually wet food is better for the cat. Descended from desert animals, cat's do not have a strong thirst drive and derive their water from the food they eat. Eating dry food will chronically dehydrate them(the idea that dry food cleans teeth is actually a myth). Wet food is closer to their true evolutionary diet where they get most of their water from their food.

If you can't feel the ribs of the cat, he or she is over weight. Some cats respond better to wet food than dry. Cats are not made to digest carbs and dry food has a lot of carbs. Putting the cat on a high protein diet and reducing the amount fed may help with weight loss. Exercise helps too!

All cats are different, in size and weight. Typically, if you can't feel their rib structure when you pet them, they are most likely overweight. In general, if you have a tabby, they are between 7 and 12 lbs. with the male being heavier and larger in size and stature.

Treats are fine, but they shouldn't be given all the time, but for what they are, treats, on occasion. Soft food isn't the healthiest thing for them either, as they need the crunchy hard food to help in keeping their teeth clean. Decay isn't always easy to see, and causes them pain.

Reduce the amount of food slowly that the cat eats everyday, and after a time weigh the cat to see if it's lost weight. Also, get it exercising, play with it several times a week, being active is necessary. Hope this helps.
