Alaska, Iowa, Hawaii, Massachusetts, and Georgia all have outlawed ownership of the cats but the federal government classifies hybrids of wild/domesticated animals as "domesticated." I think a breeder filed a case against the ban (sorry, I don't recall the details). Also, you may want to check any RESTRICTIONS they have in Michigan.
It has only been since 1986 that the Serval (wild African cat) was crossed with the domestic cat to produce these exotic hybrids. Some people want them because of their looks while still others like the dog-like personality of Savannahs. Research the breeder and contact owners who have bought from the breeder because temperaments can vary widely. It's important to socialize them, just as you would a dog.
