I live in CT also.  My husband and I found the small, round eggs in mulch, as well.  Its is for sure a snapping turtle.  There is a water souce somewhere near and the mother turtle lays her eggs away from the water source (where she lives).  The eggs will hack in approx 10 weeks and the baby turtles will find their way to the water source.  Leave them alone and let them be.

It's hard to say precisely without knowing your location, but they most likely belong to a turtle or tortoise.
