Yes they can but you will have baby hamsters in no time. They seem to have 2 - 4 babies at a time for the most part. Mine had babies a few times. If you do not separate the dad hamster out to another cage, he will eat the babies. Yes, it is disgusting. And you must never touch the babies when they are first born for several weeks, or the mom hamster will kill them, or eat them as well. I learned all this the hard way.
You should be able to tell your boys from girl hamsters easily. Their testes are quite large for their body size. It is impossible not to see them.
