What first comes to mind is that she's trying to cough up a hairball, but while a cat does kind of make a coughing-gagging kind of sound, I don't think it could be described as a frenzy.  Are you familiar with how they sound when trying to rid themselves of a hair ball?  I would imagine she is having trouble getting her breath.  The hair ball problem can be treated with Pet Malt and similar products, plus feed her a cat food specifically for hair ball control.  It says it on the package and you don't have to pay a lot for either the food or the malt.  Pet Smart and Petco both have them, and I would think many grocery stores do too.  The Pet Malt comes in a tube, like toothpaste.  If she doesn't want to eat it, put it on her nose or her paw (not the part that she walk on, put it on the furry part). She'll lick it off.  It's around $5 here.  Purina for sure makes a hair ball formula dry cat food, and several other ones we've all heard of do as well, they cost the same as their other cat foods.  However, if she's having the fits you describe you need to get this cat to the vet PDQ.  I've never seen a cat with a hair ball with her tongue hanging out.  They sound more like hacking than gasping.  Hope she comes thru it okay.

Perhaps she has a hair ball and is trying to get it up.  Groom her more frequently to help with this problem.
