Chewing  gum  is ok unless  it is being disruptive to the like blowing bubbles stretching and pulling it of there mouth and playing then it should go in the garbage. Some chew gum to keep their mouth wet  may be do to medication. Each case is different. It should be left up to the teacher

Have you tried cleaning  sore with peroxide to clean it don't let the cat scratch and after a few  day if it look worse take the cat to a vt. Same thing happened to my cat and does the cat have flea collar and have you checked for mitts
