I've had that problem. My plumber said it could be either. I hate them too.
About once a year I find a thread snake in my bathroom. How are they getting in? The toilet? Bathtub drain? I live in Tampa, Fl and have tile floors. I can't express enough my dislike for snakes. No matter the size.
