How much honey can a beehive produce a month?

Just spoken to my  local bee man. He reckons that in a good year, he can take about 30lb of honey from a hive (He reckoned that a 50cm hive was "a bit smaller" than most hives are. There is apparently, a "natural size" for a hive, - about 70,000 bees in the summer. If there are many more than this, then they swarm to form a new "colony".
