Are there any benefits to bringing pets to work with you? Or are they just a distraction?

I asked this question based on a visit to a social media agency where they had a small terrier lounging around the office.

He was very docile, and didn't yap incessantly like pretty much any other terrier I've ever met does, so I could see how he wouldn't be much bother around the office - but did he actually add anything to the atmosphere?

I can see how having an office pet around would boost morale and team bonding, and he was a topic of conversation for guests and clients alike.

We had a dog that spent a few days in the shared office Blurtit used to inhabit, and although she belonged to someone from another startup - I think it made a nice change to have him around.

She did bark at people she wasn't familiar with at first, and she wasn't very receptive to my advances - choosing to ignore me everytime I went in for a cuddle - but I think if we had been given time to develop a bond, there could have been a fruitful friendship there, and definitely another reason to look forward to coming to work!

On the flipside, I worked from home when we the UK experienced heavy snowfall and I had to put up with the  scrutiny of two cats staring at me as I typed the whole time.

So maybe it depends on the nature of the beast... But I'd love to know what you guys think!
