Is There Any Way I Can Let My Gerbil Play Outside So He Can Roll In The Grass And Feel The Breeze In His Fur? He Wants To Have Such Adventures But I Am Afraid He'd Run Away.

What you need is an outdoor run. You might be able to find one ready-made in a pet shop. Phone around to ask.

Else it's not difficult to make the right thing, if you have the right tools, or someone handy to help. What follows is just general instructions.

Get some basic plywood and 2 sheets of fairly fine wire mesh, measuring roughly 30x30 inches each. The mesh distance should be 1 cm gaps or less. You want to cut the plywood into 4 sheets each measuring 2 feet x 1 foot. Join these to make a square that stands 1 foot tall. There are different ways to join the ply up securely with no gaps, using either screws or glue.

Use small nails to fix a fine mesh all the way around the bottom. Next build a small lid for the box you've made, screwing together wooden straits for the frame and nailing the other piece of mesh to them.

Now you have a box you can put your gerbil into, on the ground, that he can't get out of -- unless he chews through the ply, which he will, eventually. So inspect the box every time after he's been in it for repairs that need doing.

And don't leave him alone outside, because this box isn't secure against cats.

The box can be built similarly, but with a wooden frame and wire mesh sides instead of solid ply.

I would put some shoe boxes and cardboard tubes inside the outdoor box, so he has somewhere to fun and hide in between sniffing in the grass.

Keep in mind that outdoor play can mean exposure to outdoor parasites, bacteria and diseases. Only a very small risk, but you should be aware of it.

Try a hamster ball. It's a plastic ball with vents in it for air. When i had rodents, my hamster and gerbils all loved them.

Maybe if you just stay out with him, you can keep an eye on him. Or you can just put a large thing on top of him with small holes so that he can still feel lthe wind.
