Pinto is a very old (but still very common) portuguese surname.
As Freida is from India and portuguese ruled a small part of the territory  mostly during the 16th and 17th centuries but in some areas until the 20th, I believe she must descend from the portuguese India (Bombaim or Mumbai, Goa, Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Damão...).

That's just a theory but I've never heard a non-portuguese person called Pinto.

I am a Pinto from India, and yes, a lot of us were converted by the Portugese to Catholicism in the 1600's and beyond.. Hence the Portuguese surnames many christians have. Most are in Goa in India, where they resided/did conversions, however some moved to the Mangalore area in Karnataka, which is where Frieda and my family comes from. We dont have any portugese blood, but were converted by them. We moved to Mangalore because the portuguese were forcing people in Goa to wear western clothing.

The Portuguese landed at Calicut now in the state of Kerala when Vasco da Gama discovered the sea route to India in 15th century.
The missions did convert  the inhabitants to Christianity along their routes and the inhabitants inherited the surname from the priest converting them in most cases. I have come across Portuguese surnames in the states of India not ruled by the Portuguese such as Tamil Nadu, Kerela , Karnataka, where missions where perhaps active . There is some truth to say that some fled during the Inquisition in Goa. en.wikipedia.org .
Mumbai (Bombay) was ruled by the Portuguese until it was given as a Dowry to the British Crown.
Hence the Portuguese surnames acquired by the natives called East Indians.
Some Portuguese did obviously marry with the local inhabitants who are called Luso-Indians.
However Frieda Pinto is from Karnataka where here mother tongue is written in a Dravidian script called Kanada.
