Monkeys of the tropical rainforests
The types of monkeys that live in tropical rainforests (usually found in South and Central America) are fascinating and varied.

In fact, there are so many different species in this area that scientists believe they haven't even discovered them all yet!

Each of  the monkey families listed above has several different types of species, and those usually have sub-species too.

What type of monkeys live in the rain forest?
One of the most recent additions to the monkey kingdom is the Mura's Tamarin that was first discovered in 2009.

Tamarins are one of the most common types of monkey found in the big rain forests of South America, and usually grow to the same size as a squirrel.

Larger monkeys like Howler Monkeys or Spider Monkeys can also be found in rainforests like Brazil's Amazon.

'New World monkeys' is a term used to describe the species of monkey that live in the tropical rainforest environment.

One distinguishing feature that 'New World' monkeys have (as opposed to monkeys found in Africa and Asia) is the versatility of their tails. New World monkeys use their tails like a fifth arm or appendage.
