Hummingbirds are a kind of tiny birds that exhibit a number of distinct characteristics mainly in relation to their method of flying. A hummingbird feeds mainly on nectar found within flowers and insects. In order to drink nectar from flowers the hummingbird has evolved to fly in a unique way.

It can float in the air at one spot for a short period of time when feeding; it is able to maintain its position by flapping its wings rapidly with the rate being as high as 80 times per second in some species. A hummingbird hovering in mid air makes a humming sound due to the flapping of its wings which has led to its being named so. Hummingbirds are also able to fly backwards and vertically.

The heartbeats of a hummingbird reach as high as 1260 beats per minute; the metabolism rate consequently is extremely high. Hummingbirds are known to consume food more than their body weight daily; the bee hummingbird is the smallest bird in the world and weighs about 1.8 grams.
