Dirt trapped in the skin causes the body to send white blood cells to the area where they sort clump up together as a bodily defence. This is the white head that is visible on the top and also the pus-like substance that resides from it when pinched, which is then followed by the blood.

Ways to prevent them are to just basically wash skin properly with warm water which opens up the paws in the skin where dirt can get trapped and just basically cleans them out. Along with being clean, the skin also should be kept hydrated, which allows natural occurring oils in the skin to create a primary defence against dirt and bacteria. This can be maintained by drinking plenty of water and even using moisturising creams and lotions.

However, careful if you decide on popping spots because they will leave black heads behind, which are dried red blood cells on the surface and aren't very pretty.
