Often when people think about a lurcher dog, they think of a particular breed of dog, but this is in fact not the case. The lurcher dog is a type of dog, not a breed of dog. This means that you can create a lurcher from two other dogs for example, a greyhound and a whippet. You can actually specify which type of lurcher you would like !

The main purpose behind a lurcher is to create a hunting dog and a very silent and quick hunting dog : this is where the greyhound can give speed. Lurchers do make very good companion dogs, but because they are designed to hunt they do need plenty of exercise and they will hunt (perhaps even when the owners do not want them to). SO if you are considering getting a lurcher, research just how much exercise it will need, so that you can be sure this type of dog is suitable for you.
