To put it in simple words:

Earthworms need a dark,cool, moist home and being underground is their best bet at survival. Too much sunlight or heat, they become paralyzed. Too much water, and they can't breath which is why you may see some on the surface during or after a heavy rain. Earthworms are mosty nocturnal. They are mostly asleep during the day and come out at night to feed because the birds aren't...you know...awake.
