It could be argued that red-eared sliders are quite omnivorous, although their preferences do vary with age. If you're lucky enough to get a little hatchling, you should be prepared to feed this young turtle plenty of protein in the form of earthworms, crickets and shrimp. However, in order for your red-eared slider turtle to enjoy this food properly, you might need to cut it into small pieces before placing it in their tank.

Just like any other animal, these beautiful creatures need plenty of nutrition to keep them fit and healthy. Most pet stores sell pellets especially for this species which are jam-packed with plenty of wonderful vitamins and nutrients to help your turtle stay strong. This product shouldn't be relied on solely though, as carrots, green beans and even fruit can provide brilliant variety that the turtle will love. The truth behind the benefits of fruit four turtles is somewhat contestable, and as there have been worried owners who have expressed concerns about the wellbeing of their reptile friend on some discussion boards, make sure that you are quite restrictive on the amount of fruit you give your pet.

Of course, a vet or a pet care specialist will have loads of brilliant advice on how to spice up your red-eared slider turtle's diet, providing the pet with the diet it needs for a long and prosperous life. Foods that you should avoid altogether include frozen fish, and both raw and cooked chicken. Whereas fish that is frozen tends to lose precious nutrients, raw chicken is avoided because of the risk of food poisoning due to dangerous bacteria, and there isn't too much nutritional value in cooked chicken for turtles.

Red eared sliders are basically omnivores and they can eat anything like vegetation, insects such as crickets, mealworms, and bloodworms, and small fish. Their diet sometimes even comprises of pinkie mice. In terms of plants they eat freshwater plants that grow in the water, in which they survive. They are also provided with fed lettuce, shredded carrots and potatoes, and many other leafy greens as daily food. At a younger age they are considered to be more carnivorous and later on they turn out to be herbivorous. They have the tendency eat while in water as they do not produce any kind of saliva. Incase they are on the ground when they catch a feed they will go only into the water and then eat it.

Hmmm I have a red eared slider and just moved him into a bigger aquarium. The aquarium I purchashed came with a variety of fish, from lil neons. To a huge algea eater. Well day one in the tank he ate a neon. About a week later he ate 2 other kinds.(not sure what they where but where no longer than a crayon.) and well today I came home to a shark split into 2 and only the top half and scale bone remainin.. Oh my god.. The only fish left in my tank is a lil neon (amazin) , 2 other fish. And an algea eater. So it is safe to assume they EAT ANYTHING... Before I moved him into the bigger tank he was only eating feeder fish, pellets, dried shrimp, and tuna. Never would touch veggie n fruit..
