The sex of birds, like mammals, is determined by sex chromosomes. At fertilisation the sex ratio is equal between males and females. There are some studies that indicate that there is differential mortality during embryonic development. That is, more embryos of a particular sex will die before hatching, resulting in a higher percentage of hatchlings of the other sex.
