Duration of labor in all dogs depends upon size of litter. For larger litter more time is required and for smaller liter less time. Whole process of delivery starts 8-48 hours before actual whelping in dogs when signs of labor starts.
Uterine contraction that is start of labor in dogs can last for 6-24 hours followed by delivery of first puppy. Then there can be a resting period that can last for maximum 2 hours with average 30-45 minutes. Generally, you can see delivery of one puppy after every 30-45 minutes. This can take 2-6 hours depending upon litter size.
After the delivery of puppies, placenta is expelled that is completed in 15 minutes to 4 hours.
