The shampoo that everyone considers if you don't have cat shampoo is baby shampoo. It's really sensitive on the skin so it's fine to put baby shampoo on. Other shampoo's wouldn't be safe for cats.

Most human shampoos are very harsh on animal skin and can dry them out. The only human shampoo I would consider on a cat would be baby shampoo.
A gentle dish washing detergent like regular Dawn works well. Wash with a bit less that washing dishes.
