Heat cycle is period in female dogs during which hormonal changes take place and she can become pregnant if gone for mating. This important phase of a female dog starts at the age of 6-8 months. This period can be of 3 weeks. Usually, heat cycle is repeated 2 times in a year with a gap of six months. Heat cycle in dogs starts with vaginal swelling and bleeding that can last for 7-10 days.  Dogs usually go for mating in the second stage of heat period when this bleeding is stopped or reduced. At this time, female show flagging that is an indication for acceptance of male for mating. If dogs become pregnant then pregnancy can last for 63 days.

Heat cycle in dogs can be of an average three weeks. It starts with vaginal swelling and bleeding that can last for maximum 7-10 days. After this bleeding tends to decline and dogs secrete other discharge and show flagging that is indication of acceptance of male dogs for mating. This occurs during 11-15 days of heat cycle.

Heat cycle in dogs ends after the mating either successful or not in 3 weeks. After the mating or crossing, heat cycle can continue for one more week. If dog become pregnant then there will be a gestation period of 63 days. In case of no pregnancy, heat cycle will be repeated after 6 months.
