What Do Ferrets Eat As Pets?

Ferrets are carnivores ,as pets they eat ferret food that you would find in a pet store which must be very high in protein because of their metobolism.Domestic ferrets need a specific diet and feeding them rodents is not recommended because they don't live in the wild and have a completely different lifestyle as the wild ferrets. In the wild, such as the Black Footed Ferret, they feed on rodents of all kinds. That is why it is NOT recommened to have own a ferret with a hamster or a mouse for example. Even though they are domesticated, it is still possibly be instinct to harm or eat the rodents

I have a ferret and he eats dry cat food.  He does well on it but I would suggest that you feed yours wet cat food.  This will make your ferret less prone to bladder and urinary track infections.  Ferret food is an option but the wet cat food will be better for him/her.  You may want to talk to breeders .  I know one lady has hers outside all year round and they eat magpies.

They eat small rodents like mice...

Ferrets also eat day old chicks or rabbit or you can occasionally give them stewing steak.

Well ferrets are carnivores so you can feed them on meat but it is probably best to feed them on ferret food! :)

Feed your ferret high quality ferret or kitten kibble or as mentioned above, day old chicks or other meat. You could also try frozen raw meat.

The kibble should contain a minimum of 32% meat based protein and 18% fat and a maximum 3% fiber. Your ferret cannot digest fiber, vegetables or fruit, so try to avoid giving that (it can cause blockages).

Also, I wouldn't recommend any type of wet food. Not even for cats or dogs. The nutritional value of wet food is particularly low and it wil stick to the teeth causing teeth decay. The only time you should feed your fuzzbutt wet food is when he's sick and refuses to eat. In which case your vet will recommend a special brand of cans that's a lot higher quality than grocery store cans.
