Here is a short and direct answer. For the same reason that you need to eat and drink.

There are airitarians still living here,
not many but they still exisit.
If puppies don't eat and drink, they turn into cats. No dog wants to be a stinky feline that poops in a box.
So they don't die, but more importantly, so that they love you :-)
Tell you what . . . Stop Eating and drinking for 3 days and come back to us . . I bet you'll figure it out.
